General Music
Students in 6th and 7th grade take a general music class for nine weeks. They study Broadway musicals, participate in a weekly drum circle, sing, and compose music. This year, 7th graders will compose a blues song, create music and sound effects for a cartoon, learn a Latin rhythm on the drums, and make a classical song sound modern through a computer software program called Garage Band.
Mixed Chorus
The mixed chorus is available to 8th graders only and they take the course four days per week for one semester. Students learn to sight read and understand how to read music. A variety of music is presented to them throughout the semester including cultural songs, popular songs and three or four part harmonies. The mixed chorus performs for concerts and events throughout the semester.
Percussion Ensemble
The percussion ensemble is available to 8th graders only and they take the course for four days per week for one semester. Students learn the proper techniques for playing various percussion instruments and are challenged with a new rhythm chart each day. Students rehearse three or four ensemble pieces throughout the semester and perform for various events.
General Drama
Students learn the basics of improvisation and beginning stage techniques. The goal is to foster creativity and freedom of expression. Students learn the basics of scene writing. One quarter will combine with the Human Skills class and studenst will explore taking the issues discussed and turning them into short scenes.
8th Grade Scenes
Students take an intensive look at scene study. The class will prepare five scenes over the course of the semester. Each scene examines a different acting discipline, such as: Character Study, Objectives, Emotional States, Conflicts and Comedy
8th Grade Shakespeare
This semester-long course introduces students to the world of Shakespeare's language. Students examine speeches from different plays and learn to create short performance pieces from the various monologues.
6th and 7th graders take art for nine weeks, and 8th graders for an entire semester. They focus on the process printing, the elements of drawing, computer art, and freehand drawing. Student artwork is framed and put on display throughout the school.
Boys' Chorus
All boys are welcome to join the boys’ chorus which meets every Thursday during club time. The boys’ chorus perform at various events throughout school including a Holiday and Spring Concert.
Girls’ Chorus
All girls are welcome to join the girls’ chorus, known as the “Friday Falsettos.” The girls' chorus meets during Tuesday club and Friday lunch. The girls perform at various events throughout the year including a Holiday Concert and Spring Concert.
Art Club
Includes cartooning, working on other projects from other classes, and crafts.
Improv Club
Students play a variety of drama games that invite them to explore their creative side with improvisation.
Jazz Band
The jazz band is open to all middle schoolers who have had at least one year’s experience on their instrument. The jazz band meets every Monday after school. We performs throughout the year at various events including the Knight Club, Holiday Concert and Spring Concert.
Knight Club
The Knight Club is a student-run talent show that occurs three times per year. It a popular and well attended event with a very supportive audience. 8th grade students are the M.C’s and 6th and 7th graders help with lights and stage crew. All students are encouraged to perform a dance, song, skit or specialty act.
Plays/Musicals
Our Drama program offers two plays and one musical throughout the year. Auditions are held before each production and students rehearse after school. Our end of the year musical is a huge undertaking and includes professional sets and musicians.
