Sophomore Molly Lapolla , a second year varsity player, scored two goals on free position shots but it wasn’t enough for the Menlo girls lacrosse team as they dropped a 9-3 contest to St. Ignatius yesterday. The game was much closer than the score indicated according to Knights coach Jenn Lee

“I was proud of how hard the girls fought,” said Lee . “They wanted to schedule a rematch as soon as the match was over. That is always encouraging after a loss.”

Senior captain Sophia Zahoudanis scored the other goal for Menlo (1-2), who dropped its second straight game. All of the Knights’ scores came in the second half. Menlo returns to action on Friday when they host Bishop O’Dowd. (Back to Top)

Senior Katherine Walters recorded a hat trick for the Menlo girls lacrosse team yesterday, but it wasn’t enough as the Knights (1-1) fell 8-7 to Acalanes High School in Lafayette.

Katherine was outstanding for us today,” said Menlo head coach Jenn Lee . “She had some lethal shots.” Menlo trailed 5-3 at the half before mounting a furious comeback with four late second half goals. Senior captain Chrissy Guibara scored the last goal for Menlo with a little over a minute left. Erica Swanson and Sophia Zahodanis also added a goal each for the Knights.

“It was heartbreaking for us because we beat one of the teams Acalanes had lost to,” said Menlo head coach Jenn Lee . On paper it looked good, but we had a problem with the heat today and didn’t have our ‘A’ game.”

Menlo will return to action on Tuesday for its home opener against St. Ignatius.

2004 Season Preview

The team hopes to improve on last year’s 19-10 record. Menlo will compete in a league (PAL) and hope to contend for the championship.

The Knights return 13 talented seniors and most of them have played four years of lacrosse. Captains are Chrissy Guibara and Sophia Zahoudanis. Katherine Walters, who scored 45 goals last season, is at line attacker. Ashley Porter, Bethany Curd and Caitlin Morrison will lead the defense, with Christina Ryan in goal. They are joined by yet more seniors: Alina Huang, Katie Strachan, Nat Barrales, Kameran Johnson and Faith Goss, and first-year player Tiffany Lee. Three juniors will make significant contributions. Julia Martin was an All-American as a sophomore and a Pacific Region national team player. Caroline Crandall is a solid attacker and Caitlin Roberts will debut on varsity after two years with the frosh-soph.

Nearly a dozen sophomores return to the program. Returning to varsity will be midfielder Molly Lapolla and line defender Gabi Bressack. The rest of the crew includes: Mary O’Reilly, Erica Swanson, Sarah Montgomery, Katy McKinnon, Alex Steiny, Michelle Wegenstein, Megan Teixeira and goalkeeper Shannon Chung. Kerry Wang is recovering from injury, but should be back soon. Over spring break, the girls are going to Orlando, Florida, for spring training at Walt Disney’s Wide World of Sports. While there, they will also play 3 non-league games against opponents from other states.
